Arnold Zable, in his career as a writer, journalist, novelist, essayist, educator, advocate and globe-trotter, and in his life as an author and human being, has always been passionate about the human story.

Arnold has carefully listened to and faithfully retold countless stories from a full spectrum of humanity: friends, family, survivors, asylum seekers, refugees, journeymen and gutter-dwellers.

On a recent edition of  ABC Radio National’s The Book Show, Arnold Zabel, delivering the 2009 Basia Leinkram Lecture in Melbourne, got to wax lyric about why the human story is so compelling, about his driving passion to share those stories, about the images and memories that drive him  as an author, about the nature of human difference and connection,  and about how great the Yiddish language is for the hurling of creative insults.

You can hear the full  Basia Leinkram address, courtesy of Ramona and The Book Show, here (39 mins):

Arnold Zable might be best known as an author for the 2001 best seller Cafe Scheherazade which follows the lives of former refugees who now meet in a small coffee and cake shop in St Kilda in Melbourne.

From the Arnold Zable website:

“In this mesmerising book, at once fable and history, fiction becomes a way of remaining faithful to the stories of cities strung across the globe like pearls on a string, to the maps and narratives etched in the minds of old men talking in a cafe by the sea.”
